Well, I got mine this morning and it's on it's way back to Amazon tomorrow.
The camera is very well built, it looks and feels the business. I would recommend getting one in black or in green otherwise there's just too much silver going on.
This camera has it's obvious plus points which I won't go into - it's waterproof, there you have it.
I have a lot of pro SLR equipment, so thought that there was little point in trying to get a compact that might try to compete with them on image quality...so instead I thought that a robust compact would be the way forward, something that I could take with me anywhere and not have to worry about if I dropped it.
For this benefit I was prepared to take a hit on the image quality front and decided not to expect too much from this compact. But - when I saw the first batch of test shots I was laughing, they were that poor. Soft all over, highlights blown to bits, very high noise in the darks (even at 100 iso - 400 was really poor). Colours were muted and the barrel distortion and lack of sharpness got very poor near the edges. In short it was terrible.
If you are looking for image quality - look else where.
The video function is just plain irritating. Clips are limited to 10 seconds only at VGA 30 FPS if you are using Olympus's XD 'M' cards (stupid and VERY annoying format), and it's the same using the mini SD to XD converter. If you use the 'rare and hard to get hold of XD 'H' cards', which only seem to come in 1GB sizes - then you can lift that limit. WHY Olympus, WHY?!
Also all sound on the video comes across as if it's been recorded by someone speaking with a rag in their mouth - muted and muffled. Probably because it's designed to work under water.
On the plus side the camera's OS is good, and easy to navigate- it has some really useful features and is good for the novice to enthusiastic armature.
If you really need a camera that works at these depths without a pro case, then this is your only option right now - the pentax W60 does a better job on image quality, but doesn't go as deep as this camera. Other than that I would avoid it and simply either buy a £100 compact and then replace it with another £100 compact when it breaks (still cheaper and better quality than this) or get the W60, or just get a canon ixus and take care of it!
The Panasonic Limux range are also worth it.
Personally I will be getting the Ixus 860 IS and i'll try not to destroy it too quickly :)
I will try this line of cameras from Olympus again in another 2 or 3 generations time, I love the idea of having a camera that can take a battering and get wet, just not at the expense of terrible image quality, which in the end is all that counts.

The first one I bought back in April for my daughters 18th. However, it went straight back as all pictures displayed the same mark. The replacement was sent straight away and seemed fine until it was taken to the beach where after a dip in the water it packed up.
This was particularily annoying as we were due on holiday a week later to go snorkeling. So we bought another one. It was fantastic for three days then filled up with water. Thus I am sending two faulty cameras back as we speak.
Then to cap it all a friend who had also bought one told us that after three days of snorkeling his filed up with water.
So either we are very unlucky (4 out of 4 ) failing or frankly this product just isn`t fit for purpose. Shame, because when it works it is great and just what we want.
Olympus please build one that does what it says and I will happily have one.

By Mr. S. Waltham,
I just recieved mine the other day and so far it feels like great little bit of kit. But i think thier is one thing that people need to bear in mind that i didnt realise till after i recieved the camera.
The hi Quality 30 fps movie mode (which is one of the feature i plan to use alot) Is limited to 10 sec rec time UNLESS you update the firmware to ver 1.1 AND you have to use a Type M+ XD card, if like me, you didnt realise this and bought a standerd Type M XD card (or indeed any of the Micro SD cards) your out of luck. everything else works fine but no Hi Quality movie fun for you. Im now haveing to go through the hassle of returning the card i bought so i can replace it with a Type M+.
Its a bit of a poor show on Olympuses part, all it would have taken was a little disclaimer in the advertising material. Come on guys is that too much to ask?
Other than that i still think this a great little camera.

I bought this camera to take on honeymoon to the Maldives, and at first was totally blown away by it, the number of different functions it has (different light settings etc) are great for holiday photos, and we got some brilliant underwater shots. After 10 days though I started getting error messages saying that there was water in the card slot, and that the cover wasn't closed, although it was. About 3 hours later the camera died totally, despite having only been used to depths of about 1 metre while snorkelling.
I have returned it for repair, but the company I bought it from (Simply Electronics) have now had it for 2 months so I have no idea if it is just a faulty model or isn't fit for purpose. I'd like another one, but buy from a good retailer incase you have a problem... (and definitely avoid Simply Electronics - shocking customer service).

I restore classic cars and needed a tough camera for recording my work and taking photos for reference, one that could stand up to the harsh conditions of a hot, dusty workshop.
The 1030SW sounded perfect and it was a little more than i wanted to pay but chose it because of it's "tough" claims.
On day one without even using the camera it picked up a few scratches...not a problem but a bit surprising for a camera that is supposed to be able to take a bit of abuse. A week later the battery failed..this was replaced by the supplier but a battery should last longer than a week.
My biggest problem is the picture quality..it's on parr with a £39.99 camera. I have tried every setting and the pictures are grainey, have no depth and the colour contrast is appauling. I have started to use a 5 year old, cheap when new, digital camera as the picture quality is better.
Mine is going back to the supplier for a refund.
