I have given this 4 stars based on other reviews because I am looking for a digital camera for my wife and have read hundreds of reviews of different cameras on here and elswhere.

I have bought 3 digital cameras from Amazon, 2 Kodak (for my kids) and a Fuji S5700 for myself.

I rate the customer reviews here very highly and have learnt to weed out the whingers.

This camera, like to Kodak ones I got use only 2xAA batteries, hence you can't expect a huge amount of use from them. In fact the Kodak cameras won't even work on Alkies, but 2700 NMHi batteries give phenominal life!

Alternatives? cameras with a dedicated battery pack! OK if you remember to charge it up fully regularly, but useless for a spur of the moment trip or family gathering, and no car charging facilities most of the time for those of us who go camping.

The Fuji takes 4xAA and works fine with the part used AAs I can get free from work, but of course it's a bigger camera.

Ease of use is a must in my forthcoming purchace, and this seems to fit the bill. I'm going to order 4x2700 NMHi batteries and charger pack (about £10) plus a couple of SD cards, and will let you know how it gets on.

For those with broken ones.... well things DO break, contact Amazon and get a refund or exchange, what's the point of sticking it on the coffee table as an ornament then whingeing on here?

Thanks Amazon for all the great things I've bought on here over the years, and for replacing/refunding the faulty ones.

    Richard :-)

PS does anyone know what maximum size SD cards this takes? I assume it takes 2Gig, but will it take 4 & 8 Gig? Thanks.

By Mr. F. L. Dunkin Wedd,
I have to correct some of the ignorance and misinformation in other reviews.

    Batteries
    ---------
The great advantage of this camera is that it uses standard AA batts, (unlike, for instance, my Sony which has its own special rechargeables at 12 quid a pop).

Do not even bother (I repeat DO NOT BOTHER) with everyday alkaline batteries (including those supplied with the S630). Buy a charger and four NiMh rechargeables at the same time as the camera (if you don't already have them).

2700mAh rechargeables should last for hours. Obviously, if you take innumerable flash photos or keep zooming in and out, or keep turning the camera on and off, the usable time will be shortened - hence buy FOUR batteries and keep the two spare ones charged up and on hand.

You will need to tell the camera you are using rechargeables (as some reviewers have clearly failed to do!) - see pages 13 and 37 in the manual.

    SD Card
    -------
You'll need an SD Card. At the quality of the pics I've uploaded here, you'll get 40 images on a 64Mb card, 220 on a 256Mb and so on upwards. If you buy a 150X card, the access time will be reduced, and you can therefore take pictures quickly one after the other.

    Case
    ----
There is no case with the camera: get yourself a cushioned protective case. I paid 42 quid for the S630 (from Amazon - but their price seems to fluctuate), and at that price it's astonishing value. But at that price it will be made of plastic, and if you drop it the inevitable will happen.

    Usability
    ---------
If you want to be David Bailey, then this won't suit you. If you want an incredibly easy-to-use camera that takes great pics, then this is for you. Just point and shoot.

    Manual
    ------
Do yourself a favour: read the manual. It's on the CDROM with the camera

    Quality
    -------
I've uploaded a few sample pics - judge for yourself. For this silly money, I think the resolution, colour balance and veracity are incredible.

    PC Installation
    ---------------
Was effortless. I didn't bother with the Samsung software though: Irfanview and Picasa do all I need.

    Screen
    ------
The screen is just great - nice and big and beautifully clear: envious glances have already been directed at it. The 2.5" measurement is (like TVs) a diagonal one. The actual screen size is 1.5"x2" - and it's ample. If you're worried about it scratching, you can buy a screen protector (search Amazon).

    Total cost of ownership
    -----------------------
The fact is, you can't fit yourself out with a camera outfit of this quality for forty-odd quid. Budget as follows:

    - S630: £40
    - Batteries and charger: £15
    (UniRoss X-Press 700 charger and 4 batts for £12.56 - Amazon)
    - 150X SD card £15
(Transend 2GB 150X Secure Digital SD Card £14.50 - Amazon)
    - A protective case: £5 (any old where!)

Total cost therefore is: £75 - and it's STILL a stone cold bargain. Highly recommended (to those with enough common sense to use it!).

    By P. J. Chester,
At first i thought the camera wouldn't take very clear pictures and would blur quite often. how wrong i was. just because it's 6.0 mega pixel dosn't mean it can't take profesinal looking pictures. I bought this camera because i broke the lcd on my slr fujifilm S5800. And i needed a cheap camera to replace it. i was tight on money. And let me tell you, this camera took the same pictures as my previous ones. even better. Also when you put them on the computer the pictures come across massive.
I deffently would recommend this camera.

Same as everyone else, nice camera if not a bit bulky, however the battery consumption is awful! Brought it a week or so before i went to africa for 3months and used up all my battery supplies within a couple of days, everytime i saw something worth taking a pic of, i had to change the bateeries or turn the round to get just 1 photo! awful, ruined my photos for th etrip, luckily i can steal my friends pics!
