By John Corbett,
First of all, to justify the star rating.
In my opinion, this phone has all the features and functionality of a 5-star phone. I upgraded to it 2 months ago and loved it. The camera is as good as you can get on a mobile phone (though still not as good as my standalone Sony, but I didn't expect it to be) and the media player, auto-rotate, menus... basically everything was of the high standard I've come to expect, having previously used the K750i and the K800i - both award-winning handsets.
Unfortunately, this handset loses a star for the following reason, and this is my warning to people considering this handset: within 6 or 7 weeks, it turned itself off and wouldn't turn on again. When I took the handset to O2 (my contract provider) they said it was a problem they'd had with many handsets. They're repairing it for free so I'm happy, but it's worrying that the problem is so reportedly common.
This really does have the makings of a great phone, but if this problem is true, I'm worried how many times it'll need sending off to be repaired/replaced. Slightly disappointing for what's supposed to be Sony's new flagship handset, despite otherwise perfecting their technology, so 4 stars instead of the usual 5.

By J. Stuart-colwill,
This is partly a review of the reviews and a review of the phone itself. I'll admit straight off the cuff that I only got this phone yesterday but I have had a good tinker with it in that time.
It took me a while to decide whether to actually get this phone or not having read some of the other more negative reviews about the phone freezing/switching itself off and the buttons being uncomfortable/awkward etc, but I decided I would take a chance anyway as no matter how bad it was, I couldn't dislike it any more than my (ex) current phone (LG Prada).
If you are used to Sony Ericsson phones, it is really nothing new to their standard menu layouts and functionality. I haven't yet got to the stage where I feel the need to read the manual anyway!
The one thing that I've found interesting (and not necessarily in a good way) is that the reception seem to fluctuate quite a lot. I also have a w810i and the reception in my house is a constant 5 bars, but this one can go from 5 bars to 1 bar just putting it down on the table. Saying that though it hasn't actually lost all reception at any point.
The camera is good, I've always had Sony digital cameras and as a point of comparison it isn't bad. Interestingly in medium light levels if you use the flash it actually results in darkening the picture more than if you don't use the flash. However the Photo fix option once you have taken the picture does a pretty good job of sorting out any problems like under/over exposure etc.
Touching on the subject of the buttons. If you occasionally suffer from fat finger syndrome then you'll probably find the top section of the keypad a bit fiddly as you have literally got the 3 feather touch buttons on the bottom of the screen, then make call/short cut button and the end call/clear button directly underneath those, then the square frame of the directional button kind of inbetween. On the plus side for general texting though I've found that there is much less inclination to press several buttons at once as there is a gap between them. This also proves handy if you happen to be wearing gloves. Being a motorbike rider I found texting to be a particular problem when I kept my gloves on as you would inevitably press about 3 buttons at a time.
In summary I decided to give the phone 5 out of 5 stars because so far it has done exactly what it has claimed to do, good camera, excellent screen. If you are looking for something with more bells and whistles though then you would probably be better off going for something like the iphone as that might provide slightly more novelty value in the short term. I got bored playing with this phone after a good couple of hours.
Good solid all round phone.

The camera is terrible - it over sharpens the pictures so they have jagged edges!

Got this with an orange contract at the carphone warehouse in may, after two weeks it started freezing. I got a replacement but after about two weeks the same thing started to happen. I got another replacement and lo and behold it started to freeze!! After approaching cpw through their helpline I am awaiting delivery of an LG Viewty - it couldn't be any worse than the k850i!
Buy this phone at your peril!!

I despise this phone. I'd give it less than a star if I could. It's the bane of my life. I am currently looking on Amazon to buy another phone. I have 8 months of my contract left, and I can't stand it.
After having it 6 weeks or so, I was texting and it was as if the sim card had re-set itself. When I tried to get into my inbox it said 'operation failed' which means I have to re-set the master settings so I lose all my texts, etc. This happens at least twice a week.
Around 6 months ago, there I was texting again and the back touch button activated. Thinking I must have touched it by accident, I thought nothing of it but then realised everytime I pressed the '5' key it activates the back touch pad so frequently throughout a text I get the 'do you want to save this text message'. The same also applies for when I press the down key... It also does it for the '4' '6' and 'left' button but it's ad hoc for these three.
When I'm on the phone it has a habit of freezing and cutting the call off. My friends keep thinking I've hung up on them. There is also no way to deactivate the touch pad when you're on the phone so I have to hold the phone at an angle or I find myself sending blank texts to people.
As time goes on the three touch keys become less reactive. I can't really use the 'back' one now unless I dig my finger in, but hey, I always have the 5 key...
It turns itself off. If it wasn't for the fact the alarm still goes off when the phone is off, many a time would I have been late for work.
The battery life is rubbish [which tbf can be said for all SE's].
The 5mp is overrated. If you put your finger anywhere on the back of the phone when using the flash your picture comes out strange. Really dark and it alters the colours.
I also don't know how a man or anyone with large hands would be able to text. The buttons are really small and really hard. When I first got it it took my fingers and thumbs about a month to get used to it cos they were really sore [I am an avid texter].
All these other positive reviews, don't listen to them. They've had this phone a mere weeks before it gets rubbish... Take it from someone who's suffered with it for 10 months and don't buy it. Everyone I know who has this phone despises it.
