i bought this camera to film a friends wedding it was great not having to change tapes, and i bought a bigger battery which lasted all day. I also bought the sony vegas movie studio so that i could edit the wedding as a present for my friend, i have used premier elements before but thought i would use sonys product thinking it would run smoothly. I put the camera in the docking station and opened sony vegas i renamed some clips and imported clips into the media files and left some clips on the hard drive. i then thought i need to save the whole footage on a disc so that i didn't loose any. i used the one touch disc burn on the docking station, after doing this i looked back on the camera and all i can see is a symbol like a broken chain and clips that i didn't name have gone off the computer. I have looked through the manual and cannot find any info on this and seem to be left with only part of the wedding. I don't seem to be able to get any help on this as i'm not sure if i have lost the data or not. So although the camera has been great to use its no good if i don't have confidence at editing i feel that i can't use the camera again until i find out what has gone wrong. and i can't edit my friends wedding. There needs to be more back up support from sony.

I wanted a new camcorder for the holidays. I come from the era of tape, and although I have gone digital in all other areas, this was the last one to be upgraded. My first camcorder was a Hitachi, that was a Super VHS-C, would record 30 minutes, and the thing looked like what the BBC camera men would carry and it cost £1,500.00 back in 1991. My we have come a long way!

The Sony camcorder is simply stunning (not without faults - later!).
With the £50.00 cash back its only £690.00 or there about. I have given it 5 stars, but it should score a 4.75, as it does have some flaws, but these are very minor gripes when you consider what you get.

Firstly, it looks the nuts. It looks cool; it's well built and oozes quality. For me I would class it as tiny, it sits in the palm of my hand, so no more lugging around large camcorders, tape and bags etc. That is a big advantage.

The menu system makes it very easy to use, the touch screen works like a dream, and the image on the little screen is truly superb. I love all of it.

Sony really has got it together when it comes to consumer electronics. The accessories are mainly the cables, with a docking shoe, which is useful for charging when not in use.

The picture quality far surpasses my expectations. My wife's garden looked simply stunning on our 46 inch 1080p Sony Bravia. The colours don't run like on the old tape camcorders, and the greens of the trees in the garden are virtually life like. I can't explain how good they look. The camcorder was primarily bought for outside holiday shooting and for this it will be ideal.

Here is the big selling point for me, and where Sony gets it right ahead of all the other competition. Inter connectivity with other Sony products. I can plug the camera into my PlayStation 3, via the USB cable and simply either watch the footage on the TV via the PS3, or can even copy the footage to the PS3 and keep it on there and watch when I want. This for me is truly the best thing ever, no more burning DVD's or plugging it into the TV etc; I can just plug into the PS3 copy it off and watch it. That for me is the major advantage of digital technology and where Sony has got it right.

Our PS3 is the centre of our living room, we have all our digitalphoto's on ther, all of our music, and now we can have all of our home movies on there.

I can now just get myself a larger external hard drive, and simply have a library of my footage on a hard drive and can simply watch when needed, no more discs, no more burning DVD's.

    Convenient it is.

My only 2 gripes are these.

You can set it to fade in and out when recording, but you have to remember to do it every time, you cannot default it. Something my old Sony tape camcorder would not do either.

Secondly, fast panning shots do become slightly blurred, so when doing panning shots, you have to take them slow, but it can happily record moving footage as long as your not moving fast, trees in the wind looked brilliant, but pan away fast and it will blur, but I can't imagine my old camcorder did any different.

So there yo have it, its well built, quality, superbly convinient, cheap, great picture and only minor faults.

    Well done Sony.

This camera is nothing short of excellent. I had prvious owned a 8mm tape camcorder, and eventually sold it because of the labourious process of converting scenes to watchable content on a VCR.

The SR12 is a million miles away from that experience and I have quickly started putting together my own films. There is a total flexibility of how to watch your content, and I now store everything on my removable hard drive and play on the Lounge Media PC or PS3. DVD or Memory Stick transfer is also a breeze to share with the family.

Thouroughly recommend Vegas Platinum to edit movies also.

Film quality is excellent and the 120Gb harddisk is ample for capturing additional shots to make a final cut. Stills are very impressive and will replace a large number of applications from my current still camera (recommend 7.6 Mpixel).

The camera itself is very capable and adaptable, with a wide range of options that can be added to increase the packages capabilities.

There are no other HD camcorders that compare to this and a great price on Amazon with rapid delivery - Mine was here within 20 hours of order!

I bought this camera via Amazon and use it for both business and pleasure. I needed a camera that provided high quality images both still and video for business with detailed views of the environment and macro images for forensic work. I have not been at all disappointed. I have used it in the UK "as is" and got magnificent results with pinpoint clear video and stills. I have also been using it in the Middle East but to protect it from humidity and sand bought the SPK-HCD Sports Pack. Although bulky that performs well. Editing footage is far easier and more rapid than with conventional film to computer transfer methods particularly with the provided "Picture Motion Browser" software. Just attach a USB cable and away you go.But for full HD quality the Sony Vegas Pro 8 software is required. I used a trail version of that and found that I got excellent results. Having the hard drive also means its far easier to decide on footage "on the fly". Overall the camera is an extremely good product and although I am Sony fan anyway I would suggest they may have a market leader with this product.

Having had a number of video cameras in the past, I am more than pleased with the HDR-SR12E. One reviewer complains about the quality of the stills, but for a video camera I think they are more than acceptable. Yes, the frame grabs are only about 800 to 900kb in file size, but in photo mode they are around 3mb.........perfectly adequate for holiday snaps to print at 5" X 7".

On the downside, its a nuisance having to select fade-in/out every time you use it.......my old Panasonic VHS-C camera of twenty years ago was better in that way! Also, with a camera of this value one would expect Sony to supply the full manual in booklet form rather than on cd!

I'm giving it 4 stars........a couple of quibbles in the previous paragraph, but otherwise a camera that takes super quality vids and saves you having to take a compact digi camera to the beach as well!
